Our Facilities

RCHS is exceedingly grateful for our wonderful community of volunteers and donors, who continue to support our mission! With their help, we have made many improvements to our facilities over the years, but we continue to face space-related challenges.

Cat Area

Facilities: RCHS currently uses our original building dating from 1958 for our cat program. It has one main room where most of our cats are housed, a laundry room, and a new small bathroom. The main room houses healthy, social cats and kittens. We use the laundry room to house cats with medical issues who need to be separated from the main population, but hope to raise funds for a dedicated isolation unit soon.

Thanks to generous donors, we recently added five outdoor cat play areas—three that are attached to the building under roof, and two stand-alone structures. Here, cats can get outside safely to play, socialize and enjoy enrichment with each other and volunteers who come to play with them.

Intake: We take in approximately 300-350 cats and kittens each year, with a capacity of about 60 cats at one time. We depend on adoption, fosters and rescue to open up space for lost and abandoned cats. You can also help by spaying and neutering your cats!

Expansion Goal: We would like to move toward a free-roaming model where most cats are not restricted to cages, but our space isn’t adequate to do that. We also do not have adequate medical isolation space for our cats. Controlling illness in sheltered cats is critical, and while we have an excellent record of doing that, it is a real challenge in our current facility.

Dog Area

Facilities: Our newest building was added in 2008 and houses our administrative offices, medical clinic, laundry facilities, and kennels for 50-60 dogs and puppies. This includes an area that houses all of our immediately adoptable dogs, an area for dogs that are on stray-hold status, receiving medical care or recovering from medical procedures, and an isolation unit. We also have two large play yards where the dogs are able to run and play with each other.

Thanks to Eagle Scout Peyton Shields of Boy Scout Troop 88, we now have six outdoor runs that are used to hold dogs while their indoor kennels are being cleaned. Peyton planned the project from start to finish, including raising the funds and organizing volunteers to pour concrete pads, purchase the kennels and install them. Check out the photos! We are grateful for our partnership with Randolph Count Eagle Scouts who choose our animal shelter for their projects!

Intake: We take in approximately 600-800 dogs and puppies every year, maintaining a fairly consistent capacity of 45-55. We rely on adoption, fosters, rescues, and our transport program to maintain a live release rate of over 90%. You can also help by spaying and neutering your pets!

Expansion Goal: We hope to be able to raise funds to build additional space for adopters to meet prospective pets, a community room for public education and dog training, and a dedicated medical clinic room. We would also like to replace the current fencing around our outdoor pens with taller walls to enable larger dogs to use the area without fear of them escaping, and to install additional play yard areas to accommodate more dogs at one time.
