Post Adoption

Even if you’ve done your research and picked the perfect pet to adopt, there may be some things you’re unsure about. Don’t worry! RCHS is here to answer your questions. We want your adoption to be a success and we’re happy to help if you’re unsure about anything!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when bringing your new pet home for the first time:

  • Give your pet some time to adjust. Go slow and be patient. An animal may need seven to fourteen days to relax into his new home. He may be under a lot of stress with the change of environment from shelter or foster home to your house.

  • Dog-proof or cat-proof your home (and certainly the area where your pet will spend most of his time during the first few days). That may mean taping loose electrical cords to baseboards; putting away household chemicals, medications and poisons; removing plants, rugs, and breakables; and installing baby gates to cordon off certain areas.

  • If you have kids, introduce them to your new pet one at a time. Delay the meet-and-greets with friends, neighbors and relatives until your pet is eating and eliminating on a normal schedule.

  • If you have other pets, don't let your newest pal have free run of the house. That’s the territory of the animals who have been living with you. Allow all of your pets to meet in the new pet’s territory—and make sure you're there to supervise.

  • Plan to have fun with your new pet. Play and spend time enjoying each other. This should be a happy and exciting time for you both.

  • Bring your new pet to a caring veterinarian for a wellness exam within one week of adoption. Make this appointment even before you bring your new pet home.
  • If you adopted a dog, be sure to contact Tina Vial of Pups & Pals Dog Obedience Training as soon as possible to schedule your complimentary training session and ensure you get off to a good start with your new pet.

Don't forget to let us know how happy you are with your pet. Send us some photos of your pet in its new home! We might post them on our Facebook page!

Remember, if you have questions or problems related to your new pet, don’t hesitate to call us. And if, at any time, and for whatever reason, you are no longer willing or able to care for the pet, your adoption agreement requires that you return the pet to us. We will welcome him back, without penalty.
